Traveler guidelines
Every place has its own courtesies and ways of doing things. While you’re on tour, be mindful of how your actions affect others, because good habits also help keep you safe. This isn’t a complete list, but it’s a good place to start.
Staying safe
- Never separate from your group unless your director gives permission, and always go with a buddy.
- Keep your phone on you and charged, with emergency contact information easy to find.
- Lock up your valuables, or better yet, leave them at home.
- Don't share too much about yourself with strangers.
- Dress conservatively. Looking less like a tourist draws less attention from scammers and thieves.
On tour
- Be on time, or early, to everything.
- Listen to and follow instructions from your director and chaperones.
- Don't interrupt your guides or director. Save questions until they invite them; most will be answered along the way.
- No talking, sleeping, music, or phones during guided tours or while instructions are being given.
- The restroom on the bus is for emergencies only. There are plenty of stops along the way.
At the hotel
- Students may not be in rooms of the opposite sex unless an adult is present and the door is open.
- Never leave your room inappropriately dressed or without shoes.
- Come back from late activities quietly and quickly. Other guests may be asleep.
- Avoid slamming doors, loud music or TV, shouting, and running in the halls.
- Keep clothes off the floor, put trash in the trash can, keep food and drinks on the tables, and wipe up spills.
- Share the room fairly with your roommates, and don't leave toiletries spread across the bathroom counter.
- In elevators, let people off before you get on, step to the back, and only press the button for your own floor.
Courtesy and respect
- Remember your manners. Please and thank you are always appreciated.
- Be respectful of people, places, and customs that are different from what you're used to, and learn from them. Never insult someone or their culture.
- If you don't care for a pre-planned meal, eat what you like and leave the rest.
- Treat tickets, passes, and money like cash. Anything you lose, you'll need to replace at your own expense.
